I see posts from Mastodon pop up throughout the week that say things similar to this:
I’ve been having to block so many people who want to gatekeep, police, and God knows what else. This shit, right here, is why people leave Mastodon
.
This type of comment always leaves me scratching my head. But this morning I realized that many of these folks are viewing their social networks passively: It is something that is happening to them and they do not feel they have much choice or say-so in the matter.
Inversely, most of the folks on Streams, Hubzilla, etc. do not make posts complaining about Social Network. I attribute this to the fact that most of us feel completely in control of what happens within our social circle. We can easily block, accept, limit and filter as much as we need or do not need. We are empowered. We are not at the whim of some distant admin.
It is a different kind of thinking that results in a different type of Social Network.
