Who is your shared host? I feel like there were one or two (DreamHost and BlueHost) who had some special way of writing the cronjob

There should be a log that shows if the cron entry ran or not. I'd contact your hosting provider. This is something they should be able to check for you.

If it were me, being a simple minded person, I would just create a basic php page that does something like create a logfile. for example. Create a php file called logscript.php and put this in it:

$date = date('Y-m-d H-i-s', time());
 $log_name = dirname(FILE)."/cronjob". $date;
if($fh = fopen($log_name,'w')){
    fwrite($fh, print_r($date));
    fclose($fh);
}
?>

and then set that as a cronjob the same way you do the Hubzilla cron for example:

*/10 * * * * cd /home/myname/mywebsite; /usr/bin/php logscript.php Cron > /dev/null 2>&1
