In the same way I'm hoping to keep my 1998 car as long as possible, I think I want to keep my 2007 TV as long as possible, due to the enshittification of the market for replacements.

Your TV set has become a digital billboard. And it’s only getting worse.

TV software is getting loaded with ads, changing what it means to own a TV set.

I govern some of my TV systems from my computer and don't let them directly connect to the internet. Not much they can do without communication.

I finally finished reading this. It makes me miss the old days of plain old commercial breaks during shows. I had been wondering if I should replace my Roku box. Now, I think it is also in the category of keeping it as long as it works, because it doesn't seem to be infected with all the stuff they talk about on Roku TVs. I'm sure it it could be upgraded to do it, they would have by now.

We dropped cable years ago, so the only reason to watch the actual TV is if more than one of us are watching something together. We have Netflix, Amazon Prime, and a Plex server. Now that Netflix no longer ships disks, that is also one less reason to watch the TV (which has the BluRay player).

It would probably be better for my vision if I wasn't spending more time looking at a screen only 2 feet away instead of across the room.

@Marshall Sutherland Totally off topic, but speaking of keeping your 1998 car as long as possible: I just recently moved to Michigan from California. The weather in (much of) California is very friendly to keeping a car rust free....not so much here in Michigan due to the constant rain and then salt on the roads during winter.

I have a 1997 Toyota pickup that is in pristine condition and I hope to have it for many more years, so I have been asking around how people keep their newer cars from rusting out too quickly.
One solution is to get a layer of oil treatment sprayed underneath the vehicle each year, which will accumulate dust and dirt. Each year you get a new layer sprayed over the last, which creates a thick layer that purportedly keeps out rust.

I just got my first layer on yesterday.

Seems like you could start out by slathering on a layer of thick sludge and get a head start on having a think layer, LOL.
